English pair knocked out by seeds

Denise Payet and Mollie Patterson lost out to top-seeded players in the main draw of the French Junior & Cadet Open, while Shayan Siraj reached the consolation semi-finals.

The pair advanced from the Junior Girls’ Singles group stage – Patterson coming out on top of a three-way countback for group runner-up – and then picked up 4-0 victories in the round of 64. Patterson saw off Lithuania’s Emilija Riliskyte (11-7, 11-7, 14-12, 11-5), while Payet defeated Bolor-Erdene Batmunkh of Mongolia (11-7, 11-4, 11-5, 11-6).

However, they were drawn to play against some of the leading players in the competition in the last 32, with Patterson succumbing to fourth seed Prithika Pavade of France 4-0 (11-4, 11-9, 11-4, 11-5) and Payet taking a set off second seed Zdena Blaskova of the Czech Republic but going down 4-1 (12-10, 11-5, 9-11, 11-8, 11-7).

Mari Baldwin and Megan Gidney both went out in the group stage.

In the Junior Boys’ Singles, Shayan Siraj and Rhys Davies both went out in the groups stage. Sam Wilson had to withdraw through injury.

Siraj and Davies went into the consolation event, where Davies went out in the last 64, but Siraj went on a good run of results – including twice coming from 2-0 down to win deciding games and taking another match 15-13 in the fifth – to reach the semi-finals, where he was beaten by a Japanese opponent.

In the doubles, Davies, playing alongside Joseph Roberts of Wales, had a good win in the last 64 before the pair were knocked out by the ninth seeds from Portugal in the last 32.

All other pairs involving English players went out at the first hurdle, though Baldwin & Lydia John of Wales were unfortunate to be drawn against top seeds Crystal & Amy Wang of the USA, while Patterson & Brianna Burgos of Puerto Rico went out to the 15th seeds. Payet & Gidney, seeded 11th, will be disappointed to have lost to a lower-ranked French pair.

The competition continues with the team events on Friday, with the individual Cadet events to follow. Also competing in Metz are Louis Price, Ben Piggott, Thomas Rayner and Anaya Patel.
